The Snowy Mountains Ensemble (SME) is a community orchestra dedicated to bringing musical opportunities to the people in our local and surrounding regions. Originally the Cooma String Ensemble, this group was founded about fifteen years ago, and in recent years has become the only chamber orchestra in the Snowy Mountains. We purpose to:
Give local musicians opportunities for skill development, while cultivating a love for learning in general and music in specific. Through orchestral playing, students are able to develop teamwork skills, discipline, creativity and self-expression in order to achieve excellence as a group.
Develop a stronger community by bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds.
Enrich our region's arts and culture through music performances for public entertainment.
We are a very mixed bunch of people, with a rich diversity of ages, skill levels, and backgrounds. Ages range from primary schoolers to those in their retirement years. With close to 25 members, we have an ever-expanding range of instruments, currently including violin, viola, cello, double bass, keyboard, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, and french horn.
Reviving Classical music is our specialty, but we enjoy playing some folk, popular, and filmscore music for variety. In the near future we hope add wedding and dance music to the repertoire. If you would like background music for a function or wedding, we are able to perform at events for a very reasonable fee or no cost at all for community events.
"I have enjoyed immensely being part of the ensemble. It has given me a new lease of life." -- Gordon Roberts, Concertmaster
"Thank you too
for the beautiful Carols event the Snowy Mountains Ensemble put on last night. . . . I
was VERY impressed by the standard ... AND ... just how much the ensemble
has grown!! . . . It would
be a great thing if more of our community/region had the regular
opportunity to experience the Snowy Mountains
Ensemble perform." -- Stephanie McDonald
